The skyline of Motherwell is scheduled to change dramatically on Sunday, 7 December, when the three remaining high-rise blocks—Allan, Coursington, and Draffen Towers—will be demolished in a single controlled blowdown.

The three 20-storey blocks, built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, have stood as a local landmark for more than 50 years. They are now empty and their removal is part of the council’s tower reprovisioning programme.

Demolition Safety Measures

To ensure the demolition is carried out safely, an exclusion zone will be in place from 8.30am to 4.00pm on the day of the blowdown. The zone will affect 313 homes and 11 businesses, with vehicle and pedestrian access restricted in the area between Dalziel Street and Wilson Street.

A local drop-in respite facility will be available for residents who wish to use it, with details to be provided ahead of the day. Controls will also be in place to minimise the inevitable impact of dust from the demolition.

Stephen Llewellyn, Chief Officer (Housing), called the confirmed date an "important milestone for Motherwell." He thanked residents and businesses for their patience and understanding throughout the complex process, stressing that safety is the "absolute priority" and has been carefully planned with expert demolition engineers.

The demolition will mark the beginning of a "new chapter for the site," which will then be cleared and prepared for future development.
