Contractor Appointed To Transform Dunfermline City Square

Fife Council has chosen Newlay Civil Engineering Ltd to carry out the improvement works at the former Co-op site on Dunfermline High Street.

The project, with a budget of £1.65 million, will transform the site—which has been vacant for over 30 years—into a new public space.

The design, developed by Iglu Studio, will create two connected zones: a flexible lower tier for events such as farmers' markets, and an upper tier with grassy open space for informal recreation. The project is being funded by Fife Council's Capital Programme, the Place Based Investment Fund, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Councillor Altany Craik, Spokesperson for Finance, Economy & Strategic Planning, said that the development of the city square is a key example of how the council is harnessing Dunfermline's new city status to deliver benefits for local people. Newlay Civil Engineering Ltd is expected to take control of the site this month.
