Maintenance work on the A9 Strathsteven Bridge, located around two miles northeast of Golspie, is set to begin on Monday, 11 August, after being postponed earlier this year due to a nesting Tawny Owl.
BEAR Scotland, acting on behalf of Transport Scotland, had originally planned to begin the essential repairs in May. However, pre-start ecology surveys revealed an active Tawny Owl nest on the bridge structure, prompting a delay in order to avoid disturbing the birds and to comply with the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.
The upcoming works will include structural investigations, repairs to defective concrete, replacement of bridge deck expansion joints and road resurfacing.
The maintenance is now scheduled to run until Monday, 15 September. Work will generally take place overnight, between 8pm and 6am.
To ensure the safety of both road users and the workforce, traffic over the single carriageway bridge will be reduced to one lane for the duration of the project. Two-way temporary traffic lights will remain in place 24 hours a day, and a convoy system will be used during some overnight operations to guide vehicles safely through the site.
