A public consultation has commenced for proposed significant public realm improvements on Gordon Street in Glasgow city centre, directly in front of Central Station.
The feedback gathered from this consultation will be used to develop a more welcoming, safer, and more accessible public space in this key transport hub.
The current proposals aim to enhance the streetscape by providing:
• Uninterrupted entry and exit to Central Station's main entrance, with additional space.
• Reduced clutter to improve flow for those entering the train station.
• More room for external retail seating.
• An uninterrupted sheltered space under the station canopy, free from vehicles, allowing for clearer views of the historical architectural features.
• Clearer routes for west-bound pedestrians.
• Installation of raised planters with trees, enhancing biodiversity, water retention, and the overall environment.
• A one-way traffic system to reduce vehicle speeds in the area.
• A large crossing point at the narrower carriageway to facilitate easier access to bus and taxi ranks.
• New way-finding signage to direct people to facilities.
• Additional space to address pedestrian pinch points.
• A new drop-off and private-hire spot.
• A new rail replacement bus service location.
Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for City Centre Recovery, Transport and Climate, highlighted the importance of the project: "Glasgow city centre is undergoing its biggest transformation in decades with the delivery of the Avenues programme and the renovation of George Square, and we want to keep building on that momentum. Transport hubs like Central Station are a key gateway to the city centre for residents, commuters and visitors, so there's a real opportunity to improve the city centre experience for many by making Gordon Street more attractive, accessible and welcoming."
The consultation will run until Sunday, 24 August 2025. Interested parties can find more information and submit their views via the smartsurvey link: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/GordonStreet2025/.
The public realm improvement works at Gordon Street are expected to begin in Spring 2026. This project builds on wider city centre regeneration efforts, including the ongoing Avenues programme.
