Work has officially begun on five play parks in and around Campbeltown, thanks to a substantial £186,000 share of £938,000 in funding allocated to Argyll and Bute by the Scottish Government.
The play parks located at Lochend, Hillside, Meadows, Jock's Boat, and Stewarton will undergo significant improvements. Old equipment will be removed, with some items refurbished and others replaced. Notably, Hillside and the Meadows will be fitted with new wheelchair-accessible roundabouts, a direct response to specific requests identified in a recent Council survey.
Argyll and Bute Council confirmed that they collaborated closely with the Campbeltown Community Council and Stewarton Hall Committee to ensure the chosen equipment meets the needs of local children and young people. The selection aims to promote health and wellbeing, alongside providing enjoyable recreational opportunities.
Following a competitive tender process, the contract for the refurbishment and installation was awarded to Wicksteed, the company recently responsible for fitting out the popular John McAlpine Play Park in Tarbert.
Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the summer or early autumn.
Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services, expressed his delight at the progress. "As both policy lead and local elected member, I'm really pleased to see the preparations begin for the play park refurbishments," he said.
Councillor Armour highlighted the community's vital role: "The input from the community throughout the consultation and commissioning processes shows just how important the wellbeing of the younger members of town is. What we will have, very soon, are places where they can meet up with their friends, have fun on new equipment and enjoy Campbeltown's good, fresh air."
