RBL Sustainable Precast Foundations For Dundas Homes

Construction News Image
Roger Bullivant Limited (RBL) has announced the successful installation of its in-house designed and manufactured precast foundation system for a new 46-unit residential development by Dundas in Bishopton. The project highlights RBL's focus on delivering sustainable and cost-effective value-engineered solutions, utilising low-carbon concrete to minimise environmental impact.

The affordable homes section of the development, comprising a mix of semi-detached and terraced properties, is supported by RBL's precast piling and beam system. The installation involved over 500 driven precast concrete piles and 1,500 linear metres of RBeam, RBL's proprietary precast ground beam system, to create a robust and efficient foundation. Piles were driven to design depths of 16m and 20m, specifically engineered to accommodate the challenging ground conditions present on site.

The ground comprises very soft to soft silts and clays (Linwood Paisley Formation) extending to depths of between 16.50m and 22.00m below ground level, where stiffer clays are encountered. Localised bands of silty sands were also found at depths between 14.00m and 16.00m across the site, conditions typical of the Bishopton development area. Driven precast piling was identified as an ideal solution for these ground conditions, offering a quick and efficient method of pile installation.

RBL states that its system not only ensures structural integrity but also provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional trench fill foundation solutions. The company's in-house design expertise allows for tailored systems that meet the unique requirements of each project, optimising efficiency and reducing material waste. By utilising standardised precast components, manufactured and stored at RBL's headquarters, the process minimises on-site waste and reduces lorry movements, contributing to cost control.

Gavin Hay, Scotland Area Manager at Roger Bullivant Limited, commented: "We are pleased to work with Dundas to deliver a high-quality, sustainable foundation solution for this residential development. Our precast system not only provides a reliable foundation but also supports the industry's drive towards lower-carbon construction methods."

RBL's Scotland team managed the planning and execution of this project, ensuring seamless delivery and installation. This undertaking reinforces RBL's expertise in foundation systems and solidifies its position as a leader in sustainable foundation engineering within the construction sector.
