Perth-based civil engineering firm I & H Brown has commenced construction on the first phase of a pioneering tyre recycling plant at the Port of Sunderland for new client, Wastefront.

This landmark project, known as Project Arrow, marks the UK's first facility of its kind, with the potential to recycle 10 million end-of-life tyres annually into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

I & H Brown's work scope is divided into two key elements. The initial phase involves comprehensive site remediation to ensure the absence of contaminants, primarily asbestos, along with the removal of some existing underground structures and limited drainage works. The second element of the contract focuses on the design of the Phase 2 build contract, encompassing the planning for the remaining infrastructure, foundations, and structures essential for the recycling plant. This includes the design of two portal frame structures and numerous external slabs to accommodate the process equipment.

The Sunderland project represents Wastefront's inaugural end-of-life tyre recycling facility, with ambitious plans for a series of similar plants. End-of-life tyres are recognised as a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions, a problem that continues to escalate. The Wastefront Tyre Recycling Plant directly addresses this issue by offering a sustainable solution through chemical recycling, producing SAF, for which demand is steadily increasing. This innovative approach exemplifies a circular economy, and I & H Brown has expressed pride in its involvement in ensuring the project's success.
