Morrison Construction Inspires Dingwall Academy Students

Morrison Construction has partnered with DYW Inverness and Central Highland to deliver a five-session skills programme at Dingwall Academy, aimed at inspiring the next generation of construction professionals.

The initiative, which ran from January to March 2025, provided fourth-year pupils with valuable insights into the construction industry, potential career paths, and hands-on experience. The programme coincided with Scottish Apprenticeship Week in early March.

The programme commenced with an introduction to Morrison Construction led by Construction Director Gordon Williamson, a former pupil of Dingwall Academy. He highlighted the diverse career opportunities within the sector, followed by an interactive health and safety virtual reality session facilitated by Alastair Gill. Students then visited the live Blend Centre project at Invergordon Distillery, where they interacted with Site Manager Michael van’t Zand and Assistant Site Manager Conor Flint, gaining firsthand knowledge of various construction roles.

Gordon Williamson returned to conduct mock interviews, providing students with feedback and CV advice. During Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Joiner Corey Marshall and Apprentice Joiner Olivia Macgillivray shared their experiences with the pupils, offering a real-world perspective on apprenticeships.

The programme concluded with a second visit to the Blend Centre site, allowing the students to observe the project's progress and deepen their understanding of construction processes. Notably, all participating pupils expressed interest in work experience with Morrison Construction, with many intending to apply for the company’s Apprentice Joiner position.

Donald McLachlan, Managing Director for Morrison Construction Highlands, commented on the success of the programme: "We are committed to inspiring young people to explore careers in construction, and this programme has been a fantastic way to engage with the next generation of talent. It’s been great to see their enthusiasm grow over the sessions, and we look forward to welcoming them for work experience and hopefully as future apprentices."
