New IStructE President Focuses On Sustainability, Collaboration, And Inclusivity

Mohamad Al-Dah, Director at the Jointly Owned Properties Department, Real Estate Regulatory Agency, Dubai, has assumed the role of the 104th President of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) for 2025. He succeeds Tanya de Hoog and brings a global perspective to the position, informed by his experience working in Cairo, Cardiff, London, Panama, Seoul, and currently Dubai.

Al-Dah outlined his key priorities for his presidency during his Inaugural Address on January 23rd. These themes focus on:

• Embodied Carbon Action: Encouraging IStructE members to prioritise and reduce the embodied carbon footprint of their projects.

• Forging Partnerships: Building stronger collaborations with other professional organisations, academic institutions, and engineering firms.

• Mentoring and EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion): Continuing to develop and promote mentorship opportunities and EDI initiatives within IStructE.

Mohamad Al-Dah expressed his gratitude to Tanya de Hoog for her leadership in 2024 and emphasised the evolving nature of structural engineering. He highlighted the important role structural engineers can play in creating positive change through their designs by:

• Prioritising carbon reduction in construction projects

• Fostering strong working relationships with other disciplines

• Promoting a culture of mentorship and inclusivity

Yasmin Becker, CEO of IStructE, praised Al-Dah's enthusiasm and collaborative spirit, expressing confidence in their work together to advance the field of structural engineering in 2025.
