Scottish Water To Invest £750,000 In Glasgow Sewer Upgrade Works

Construction News Image
Scottish Water has announced that it will invest £750,000 upgrading the sewer network in the Cathcart area of Glasgow to help reduce the risk of flooding.

The project will address long-standing internal flooding issues for properties in the area and will include excavations up to six metres below ground to access the existing sewer.

Scottish Water has appointed Civil Engineers George Leslie Ltd to deliver the project, which will also see teams working inside the actual sewer pipe itself.

The project will be carried out in two phases to enable an initial repair on the sewer in Clarkston Road.

• Phase One

From Monday 6 June for approximately six weeks the inside lane of Clarkston Road southbound from Spean Street/Old Castle Road to Margaretta Buildings will be closed. During this time, vehicle access to the business car park opposite Holmhead Crescent will be possible from 6pm – 7.30am, pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

• Phase Two

During the second phase of work – from Monday 4 July - the closure will be extended to Newlands Road including both lanes of the southbound carriageway of Clarkston Road for approximately eight weeks. The northbound carriageway will be unaffected.

In this phase of the works there will be occasions when teams will work seven days a week between 8am and 8pm. Due to the site location, there will be no vehicle access to Margaretta Buildings and properties to the rear during site working hours to ensure the safety of drivers and workers.

From Monday 4 July – Friday 22 July there will be no vehicle access to Margaretta Buildings and the properties to the rear between 7.30am and 5pm (Mon – Fri).

From Monday 25 July until Sunday 14 August there will be no vehicle access to Margaretta Buildings and the properties to the rear between 8am and 8pm (Mon – Sun).

From Monday 15 August, working hours will return to 7.30am – 5pm (Mon – Fri) until the completion of the works around the beginning of September. There will be no vehicle access to Margaretta Buildings and the properties to the rear during working hours.

However, this programme may change if international supply chain issues arise around components arriving from the Middle East.

Phase one will deliver 80% of the benefit to customers. The second phase of works may be postponed until this time next year if significant supply chain delays occur.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water's corporate affairs manager in the west, said: "We recognise that this will have an impact on the community and residents of the Margaretta Buildings in particular.

"We sincerely apologise for this necessary disruption, and we will work with the local community to minimise any impact.

"Internal sewer flooding can be devastating and distressing for customers and delivering solutions is a priority for Scottish Water in these instances."

Footpaths will remain open, and access will be maintained at all times for emergency services.

Scottish Water would like to thank drivers and the local community for their patience and understanding while these vital works are carried out.
