New Energy From Waste Facility At Dundee's Baldovie Industrial Estate

Dundee City Council has partnered with Angus Council and MVV Environment to develop a new Energy from Waste (Combined Heat and Power) facility at Dundee's Baldovie Industrial Estate.

The new plant provides Dundee City and Angus with a long-term residual waste treatment solution for the next 25 years, following the successful construction and full commissioning of the facility.

In addition to this, the lifecycle of the city's existing Energy from Waste facility which has been operated since 2017 by MVV Environment has now been extended to safely continue waste treatment for up to another 10 years.

The developments mean that the city can efficiently generate electricity, provide heat and minimise the amount of non-recyclable waste going to landfill.

Neighbourhood Services Convener Councillor Anne Rendall, said: "This is very good news for the city – I know our Environment service have been working hard with partners to develop this new modern waste treatment operation.

"The council's partnership working approach has helped to deliver best value for our residents and allows further progress towards our city's commitment to being energy efficient.

"This investment in a state-of-the-art facility will play a big part in the city's impressive and sustainable model for non-recyclable waste treatment and disposal.

"We have always looked to manage residents' waste in as environmentally friendly a way as possible.

"Historically, we have looked to make the most of Energy from Waste in order to minimise the amount of waste that's sent to landfill – something which Dundee is leading on, and the process has the added benefit of generating electricity as well the potential to provide heat.

"Additionally, the life extension of the original Energy from Waste facility located at Baldovie will help to increase our capacity to deal with more non-recyclable waste and play a significant part in our future waste partnership agreement with Angus Council going forward."

Angus Council Convener of Communities and Finance Councillor Mark Salmond said: "This is excellent news for the residents of Angus that we now have a long term treatment option for our waste that can't be composted or recycled.

"Angus is already performing brilliantly in terms of household recycling, with consistently one of the highest recycling rates in Scotland, and this new arrangement will ensure that Angus is also leading the way in terms of the diversion of waste away from landfill.

"Our focus will continue to be on maximising the amount we can recycle, and encouraging households to reduce, reuse and recycle more, but we can also be assured that our non-recyclable waste will be delivered to a modern facility in nearby Dundee where it will be managed safely and used to generate electricity.

"It has been a great achievement for the partner councils to establish this new state-of-the-art facility and thanks to several years of hard work and joint working. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Dundee City Council on waste and recycling matters, and I strongly welcome the agreement for our residents in the Monifieth and Sidlaw ward areas of Angus to access the household waste recycling centres in Dundee."

Under the terms of the joint venture, residents from Angus Council's Monifieth and Sidlaw ward will have access to the Dundee City household waste recycling centres from Tuesday 1st February 2022.

The new waste management agreement does not change any of the existing waste collection methods, with householders and visitors to recycling centres being asked to continue separating and disposing of their waste in the same way.
