Morrison Construction Secures £6.2m Contract

Construction News Image
Morrison Construction has won a £6.2 million contract to deliver the final phase of the Smithton and Culloden Flood Protection Scheme.

The development aims to protect 129 properties in Smithton and Culloden which are at risk of flooding during a 'once-in-200-years' event. Significant flooding events have also occurred in 2002, July and August 2011, and October 2014.

The scheme will complement works undertaken in earlier phases. Features include the replacement of a culvert between Lochlann Court and Redburn Avenue, the creation of flood storage areas in Culloden Park and Smithton Park, the removal of a culvert beneath Smithton Park and the removal of a culvert between the railway at Murray Terrace and Smithton Park.

As part of the contract, Morrison will carry out various community initiatives including providing updates at community groups, attending schools to engage with children in relation to construction, providing work placement opportunities and apprenticeship opportunities for senior high school pupils and university students.

With construction due to begin on site within the next four to six weeks, the project is scheduled to be complete by summer 2019.
