School pupils in the Shetland Islands have visited the construction site of their new £55 million school at Staney Hill.

42 students from Secondary 5 and 6 of Anderson High School (AHS) were given a 40 minute tour of the site by Project Director Mark Clarke and Site Manager Calum Cassidy.

Pupils heard the latest on the building works and some of the environmental considerations that have taken place, including the routing of water courses, drainage systems, and the recycling of excavated materials such as stone and peat.

Students also witnessed concrete being poured to the ground floor slab, following several weeks of rock breaking, clearance and site preparations.

The new AHS is being delivered by hub North Scotland and Morrison Construction.

Both the school and residential building have been designed by Ryder Architecture.

Two thirds of the development funding will come from the Scottish Government, through Scottish Futures Trust.

Mr Clarke said: "It's a busy site with plenty of activity, including over 50 workers at the moment and some large machinery and plant. By seeing the site of the new school and hostel close-up, I hope that pupils have been able to understand the scale and complexities of this exciting building project."

The project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2017.
