Aberdeen City Council has approved a budget for the development of a new learning disability centre for adults.

The Education and Children's Services Committee agreed to progress plans for a £4.3 million specialist care centre.

The building will be located on the site of the former Burnside Centre on Mastrick Drive.

The existing Rosehill Day Centre is no longer considered suitable due to a lack of specialist equipment, poor access and no room for expansion.

Upgrades are also required for the toilet and changing facilities.

The new centre will cater for around 80 people with severe physical and learning disabilities.

Office space for 40 professional staff from the council and NHS Grampian will be developed.

The project forms part of the City Council's Non-Housing Capital Programme for 2015/16 approved on 5 February.

Councillor Angela Taylor said: "We are providing a centre for around 80 vulnerable adults with severe learning and physical disabilities, a state-of-the-art facility that will act as a one-stop shop for service users.

The centre is due to be completed in December 2016.
