An official opening has been held for the new Onthank Early Childhood Centre, East Ayrshire Council has said. The ceremony also marked the official opening of a new extension to Onthank Primary School.
The £4.3m single-storey extension initially opened last year and has provided a bright, attractive learning and teaching space for pupils and staff.
It consists of six new primary classrooms, an early childhood centre able to accommodate up to 130 children, staff accommodation, toilets and storage areas. It is linked to the main school building via a glass-covered enclosed walkway. In addition, a courtyard with a soft play area for the youngest children to enjoy has been created, with the original Onthank early childhood centre garden being retained for outdoor learning.
Attending the official opening, Willie Coffey MSP, said: "As an Onthank boy I was delighted to formally open the new childhood centre and school extension. This is a significant investment in the school and the community and will provide a wonderful learning and teaching environment for our youngsters and our teachers too.
"The early years are really important to our children and families and I know the new facilities at Onthank will play a vital part in the lives of our youngsters."
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council, added: "The Council is delighted to officially open this new building and extension which is providing high-quality accommodation for our youngest learners.
"The children and staff have been greatly looking forward to this day and I know that they are thoroughly enjoying learning and working in this wonderful modern environment."
