A £2.8m refurbishment project at a school in Port Glasgow has commenced in Inverclyde.
The work is being undertaken at St John's Primary School and is part of the local authority's wider £210m schools estate programme.
Expected to take around eight months to complete, the project will include the construction of a new dining area and nursery, as well as an extension to the current gym hall. A multi-use games area (MUGA) will also be created.
Councillor Terry Loughran, Education and Communities Convener, said: "I am delighted to see the project underway. The school has a long and proud history in Port Glasgow and this will secure its place for the future.
"Like all children and young people in Inverclyde the pupils here will enjoy first class facilities and educational opportunities second-to-none in Scotland and indeed the whole of the UK."
Councillor Martin Brennan, Education Vice Convener, added: "A lot of care and attention has been made to the plans – such as a commitment to retain the school's original stone façade bearing the school's name and the year it was built – 1931. But this will be very much a place of learning for the future and an important community asset for future generations."
