Plans to merge three high schools in North Lanarkshire could be scrapped after those opposed to the proposals voiced their concerns.

The project would have involved building a new Catholic secondary school for the Motherwell area, by merging Our Lady's High School, Bothwellpark High School and Taylor High School.

However, according to reports, the proposal, which has courted controversy, now looks set to be dropped.

Councillor Jim McCabe, group leader of the Labour Party, is quoted as saying: "The Labour administration has listened to the people and their overwhelming response to this merger proposal.

"Having considered the consultation reports and the advice from officers, we are not satisfied that there are any educational benefits to be gained through this proposal and we therefore won't be continuing with it."

The issue will now be considered by a meeting of the full council, Mr McCabe added.
