Pupils Build Greenhouse Using Plastic Bottles

A very unique greenhouse made out of 2,000 plastic bottles now sits in the playgrounds of Cuiken Primary School in Penicuik.

The greenhouse was made from hundreds of plastic bottles – which would normally be thrown out into landfill sites.

However, after the school's Eco-Committee got together they thought up the novel idea to build an environmentally-friendly greenhouse, and grow fruit and vegetables for the school.

It took several months to collect the bottles – but only one day to build the house.

Headteacher, Joanna Taylor, said: "The Eco Committee has pupil, parent, staff and community members who work together to promote eco initiatives.

"New Caledonian Woodlands helped us with the design and we are very grateful for their support.

"We are going to use the greenhouse to plant seeds, grow fruit and vegetables that require additional warmth and the children would like to start growing tomatoes. These will be used and served as part of our school meals. The children are all very proud of the end result."

The school invited Provost Joe Wallace and Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, Councillor Derek Rosie along to see the new addition their garden.

Councillor Derek Rosie, said: "I was delighted to see all the hard work that had gone in to designing and building such a delightful greenhouse.

"The pupils have certainly learned a lot about recycling and the environment and it’s been a really great project for the local school."
