Dumfries and Galloway Council has said improvement works around the Burns statue will not interfere with the Guid Nychburris festival next month.

According to the BBC, the Council has said it is "confident" that the planned works will not "adversely affect" the annual event.

A £1m upgrade project is currently being carried out to improve the statue in Dumfries, but additional work has been required due to problems with drainage in the area. The delay has led to concerns that the contractors may no longer meet its completion target date next month.

However, the local authority has said the work should not impact on the festivities planned.

A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council is quoted by the BBC as saying: "If there are any changes to the work programme we will be in contact with those affected.

"The project suffered some delay as a result of drainage issues and encountering previously unmapped services, however the contractor has increased resources on site in addition to working on Saturdays.

"The contractor is working hard to finish the work and we are confident that Guid Nychburris will not be adversely affected."
