A year-long refurbishment project is due to commence at Alyth Museum, according to Perth & Kinross Council.

The museum, which is set to re-open for the 2014 season today, will be transformed under the programme.

In a statement, the local authority said the refurbishment project will be undertaken throughout 2014, with the first phase of works focussing on developing the Lower Gallery area. Subsequent improvements throughout the whole building including new interactive elements like listening posts and the installation of digital screens, upgraded gallery lighting, enhanced interpretation in the Upper Gallery and development of education resources, and improvement to the visitor entrance and exterior signs.


While preparing for the work to the Lower Gallery, additional repairs were identified as necessary in order to resolve an area of damp on one of the walls. Works to deal with this and renovate the section of wall affected will take place during May, requiring the Lower Gallery's closure. Once this is completed, the refurbishment works will continue throughout Alyth Museum as intended.

The Upper Gallery of the Museum will remain open to the public as normal during the repair works.
