Construction work has commenced in Dundee on the first new homes to be built under the National Housing Trust (NHT) Initiative.

A total of 15 two-bedroom flats are to be delivered at Sandy Loan, Broughty Ferry, and will be made available at affordable rents for people in lower paid employment.

Under the NHT scheme, developers and local authorities jointly fund the purchase of newly-built homes then make them available for rent at below market rates. These new properties will be built to high energy efficiency levels and will benefit from lower energy costs.

John Alexander, Convener of Dundee City Council's Housing Committee, said: "I am delighted to see these flats now being built.

"Along with a further 99 planned at Wallace Craigie Works, these flats will provide new opportunities for households in Dundee to be able to live in modern highly energy efficient homes at affordable rents.

"The work will also provide a much needed boost to the construction industry, and I am looking forward to seeing the new tenants taking up residence in their new homes later this year."
