An Imax cinema is to be created at Perth's Playhouse cinema, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, the owners of the venue have agreed to install the large screen as part of refurbishment works being undertaken at the building.

The move will see the Playhouse, which first opened in 1933, become the first independent cinema in the UK to have an Imax facility.

The restoration project is due to begin on site next month, with the cinema remaining open throughout. In addition to the new large screen, the B-listed building will see its interior and food court overhauled.


It is understood the development comes after a deal between cinema owners G1 Group and the Imax Corporation was reached.

G1 Group Managing Director Stefan King is quoted by the BBC as saying: "The revitalisation of Perth Playhouse marks the perfect marriage of Scotland's cinematic history and the world's most advanced cinematic technology.

"We are delighted to partner with Imax and together look forward to ushering a new era of movie-going at this landmark site."

Andrew Cripps, President of Imax in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, added: "We are excited to be a part of the evolution of the historic Perth Playhouse and of the movie-going experience in this rich and vibrant community."
