Consultation To Help Reduce Carbon Footprint

Dumfries and Galloway Council are to organise a number of drop-in events as part of the 100% RES (Renewable Energy Source) project.

The events will see energy experts provide advice on how communities can save on their energy bills as well as reduce their carbon footprint.

The first event will be held at Crocketford Town Hall on 22 March between 10am and 3pm. Those visiting will be provided information on ways to insulate solid wall properties, how to reduce home energy bills and the advantages of joining an oil club. The town hall has recently undergone work to save on energy and these measures will be highlighted in a display at the consultation. At the event, there will also be information about funding opportunities for communities. Within the Dumfries and Galloway region, 10 communities have developed Sustainable Energy Action Plans which have been designed to alleviate high energy costs.

The projects range from Micro hydro schemes to property insulation.

Councillor Colin Smyth, Chair of the Council's Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said: "A staggering forty two per cent of our homes are in fuel poverty, 26% classes as 'fuel poor' and 16% 'extremely fuel poor'. A household is class as fuel poor if they need to spend more than 10% of its income on fuel to maintain satisfactory heating.

"Protecting the most vulnerable is a key priority for the new council administration, so tackling fuel poverty is something the Council and partners are trying to address. These drop in events are an ideal way to combat the problem through expert information and advice."

Other consultation events are planned for the end of March as well as April.
