Perth Theatre has closed as part of a £15m refurbishment project, the BBC has reported.

The theatre, which first opened in 1900, will be closed for up to three years while work is carried out. It closed its doors on Saturday night following the end of the season's pantomime shows.

It is understood around £15m will be spent on upgrading and transforming the B-listed property which will see a number of the period features restored. Access throughout the building will also be improved, while a new entranceway and studio theatre will be constructed.

Horsecross Arts, which runs the theatre, has said the work will help enhance the city's cultural reputation. Funding for the project has been made possible due to a number of sources including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Perth and Kinross Council, Creative Scotland and other trusts and individual donors.
