Fife Council has said remedial works are to begin next week on the Newport Fountain in Newport-on-Tay.
The B-listed structure was given to Newport-on-Tay in 1882 by Blyth Martin, a member of a Dundee jute family.
In early 2012, the fountain was refurbished with new parts cast, railings replaced, a new stone base installed and fully repainted. However, signs of rust have since started to appear on the structure.
David Weir, Service Manager with Fife Council Property Services explained: "When we tested paint samples, it was discovered that the cast iron surfaces had not been adequately coated or properly prepared prior to painting.
"We now need to remove the defective coating and repaint."
Councillor Tim Brett added: "It's disappointing these works are needed so soon after the refurbishment, but they are necessary to bring the Newport Fountain back to it's former glory.
"We apologise for any inconvenience these remedial works cause and thank the people of Newport for their patience."
The work will begin on Monday 23 September and last for around three weeks.
