Upgrades Carried Out At Fife Schools

Fife Council has said its planned construction projects, to improve the school estate, reached a 96% completion rate during the summer holidays.

Almost 100 individual projects, jointly managed by the Council's Education, Property and Building services, were completed.

They ranged in value from £10,000 to £200,000 and provided an overall investment of more than £3m in the school estate.

Significant works included the completion of a new nursery at Leslie Primary School, the construction of a new store at Kelty Primary and the refurbishment of home economics classes at Glenrothes and Inverkeithing High Schools.

Smaller works were also completed at many schools throughout Fife.

In addition, more than £1m was invested to improve the energy efficiency of the school estate with projects varying from cavity wall insulation to replacement lighting.

At Balwearie High School alone, more than 1,000 light fittings were replaced in six weeks, and it is estimated this will help the school save £28,000 a year in running costs.

Works were also completed on the new £32m Auchmuty High School and £1m games hall project at Tayport Primary, as well as the new £12.4m Burntisland Primary, a £200,000 refurbishment of the nursery at Benarty Primary and a major extension and refurbishment of Collydean Primary.

Raymond Johnston, Service Manager with Property Services said: "While it was great for the service to deliver flagship and award winning projects at Dunfermline and Auchmuty High Schools, the summer holiday programme is equally rewarding as significant improvements have been made to around 50 different Fife schools. The preparation started in January and involved close partnership working between ourselves, education and building services."
