Families in Glasgow have launched a campaign against the expansion of a cash and carry outlet, saying it will turn their area into an industrial estate.

The Glasgow Evening Times has reported that at least 30 families living in McCulloch Street, Pollokshields, are protesting against the expansion plans of United Wholesale on Maxwell Road.

The store is located near the East Pollokshields Conservation Area and residents say the extended store will be unsightly and increased traffic will make streets dangerous in the area.

Alison Forbes, 42, told the Glasgow Evening Times: "The residents of Pollokshields are just not prepared to stand for this; it's looking like an industrial estate already, it's a disgrace."

A spokesman from United Wholesales responded to say that the extension will not affect the conservation area and, as it is to be built over an existing business, traffic levels could actually decrease.

He said: "The footprint of the extension is not located within Pollokshields Conservation Area and no development is to take place on designated green space.

"United Wholesale Scotland has held detailed pre-application discussions with Glasgow City Council Roads Department and no concerns have been raised as regards the proposal.

"No objection has been submitted to Glasgow City Council Planning from Roads officials as part of the application process."

Glasgow City Council would not comment as the planning application is live.
