Fife Council Trainees Help To Recreate Kirkcaldy's Past

The site of the old Kirkcaldy Town Abattoir has been commemorated by an impressive sandstone shield, which has been placed on ground that is now part of the Post Office sorting office in Kirkcaldy.

The stone feature used to adorn the front entrance to the abattoir and since the building was demolished had been stored at the Beveridge Park. It was unearthed in 2007 by Sheila Goodfellow of Kirkcaldy Civic Society who then investigated the possibility of doing something with the stones. With the permission of the Post Office they decided to have the stones displayed on the old abattoir site which was open from July 1932 till June 1986.

The Society contacted Fife Council’s Skills Development Centre to see if they could help with placing the stones on site and the work was carried out by trainees from the Skills Centre with assistance from the Parks and Countryside team.

Jake Arnott, Development Worker with Enterprise, Planning and Protective Services said: "We were very pleased to be able to help Kirkcaldy Civic Society with this project. It has given our trainees valuable experience, and a sense of pride in creating a lasting contribution to Kirkcaldy’s industrial heritage."
