Moray Council Greenlights Buckie Harbour Masterplan

Moray Council has officially approved a new Masterplan for Buckie Harbour, paving the way for significant redevelopment aimed at bolstering the region's long-term economic aspirations.

The comprehensive plan envisions Buckie Harbour evolving into a versatile maritime facility capable of accommodating offshore wind vessels, cargo ships, fishing fleets, and cruise liners.

The Masterplan includes proposals for extended quayside access, featuring heavy lift capabilities and dedicated laydown areas to support a diverse range of port operations. Following this approval, a four-week consultation period with local stakeholders will commence, allowing community input on the detailed proposals.

This strategic development forms a cornerstone of Moray's "Just Transition" approach towards a greener economy. Early planning and feasibility work for the Masterplan have already received crucial financial backing from the Scottish Government's North East Just Transition Fund, underscoring its alignment with national environmental and economic objectives.

Councillor Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council's Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

"This is a big step forward for Buckie and for Moray," he stated. "The Masterplan gives us a clear vision for how we can grow our economy while supporting clean energy and protecting the environment. The potential for Buckie, and Moray, to become a successful hub for the maritime sector is huge and I can't wait to see how this project transforms our offering."

Councillor Macrae confirmed that the council will now begin collaborating with key partners, including Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the offshore renewables industry, to "bring the plan to life and attract investment to make the plan a reality." This collaborative effort aims to unlock Buckie's potential as a major maritime centre, driving economic growth and supporting the transition to a sustainable future.
