Scottish Water’s £860,000 investment at Cardenden will help to improve the natural environment of the River Ore.
Improvements to the Cardenden waste water transfer system will help to address the risk of pollution to the river, which flows through large parts of central and west Fife.
Senior Construction Manager, Bill Stephen said: "Scottish Water is carrying out a significant investment to improve the natural environment of the River Ore. The quality of the river has improved significantly over the last few years, having once been subject to overflows from nearby mine workings. We are hoping to improve that quality even further.
"The programme of work, which is due for completion later this year, will involve the construction of new screens, storm tanks and controls. This will help to improve the handling of the works during extreme weather conditions."
The Ore flows through Cardenden, Thornton, Glenrothes and Coalton of Balgonie, before it meets the Leven at Windygates.
Anne Marie Dewar, Scottish Water’s Regional Community Manager for Fife said: "Scottish Water is continuing to invest across the kingdom to improve the natural environment of Fife. Millions of pounds are being invested to improve the quality of watercourses flowing through Cowdenbeath, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Cupar and Dunfermline, to name but a handful of communities already receiving tangible benefits from the important work that we do.
"Across the region our customers are using the region’s beautiful beaches, coastal waters, rivers and lochs to pursue their weekend leisure pursuits, whether that involves windsurfing or canoeing at Lochore, fishing on the Eden, or sailing along the kingdom’s beautiful coastline. We are listening to communities across Fife and delivering the investment that they tell us they need."
