The £6.2 million scheme at Parklea near Port Glasgow has already seen a new 3G all-weather pitch with floodlights installed, access to the site improved and drainage work carried out on eight surrounding grass pitches.
Regeneration Convener Councillor Ronnie Ahlfeld said: “Contractors are now building the new community stadium and the whole site really is starting to take shape. This facility will benefit so many people across the area and become a focal point for the game in Inverclyde and beyond. We have put leisure at the heart of our strategy to improve people’s health and the quality of their lives and Parklea is our flagship project to achieve that aim.”
The new community stadium will incorporate a changing pavilion and a large 3-G all-weather pitch suitable for a variety of sports including American football and staging 7-a-side tournaments. It will also satisfy Scottish Junior Football Association regulations. Drainage work will also have been carried out on eight grass pitches.
Regeneration Vice Convener Councillor Stephen McCabe said: “Parklea will be the jewel in the crown of our significant investment in leisure facilities across Inverclyde. It will provide modern changing rooms for people wanting to use 10 magnificent pitches and will be available to the local community, clubs and schools and of course Port Glasgow Juniors. These are exciting times in Inverclyde and despite the continued squeeze on the public purse I am delighted we have been able to deliver on our promise.”
