Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) is proactively raising Tenants' awareness of asbestos which may exist in their homes, to help ensure that the issue is understood and managed in full compliance with current legislation.

A Guidance Note for SBHA Tenants will shortly be issued with their regular Newsletter, to make Tenants aware of the places where asbestos could have been used when their homes were built, and what to do if they have any concerns.

Neil McCrudden of SBHA's Technical Services Department explained: "Asbestos was used in the construction of many thousands of buildings, not just housing, between the 1950's and the 1990's. The word asbestos does seem to generate undue anxiety, but in reality it can be dealt with or managed perfectly safely, if Tenants follow the correct procedures in the Guidance Note."

Neil continued: "SBHA owns 5,900 houses in the central and west Borders, and we maintain a Register of all properties which are known to contain asbestos. The Association uses accredited Asbestos Surveyors and Contractors whenever any assessments or works are required, and we place the highest priority on Tenant safety."
