A new Primary school will be built for the Milton of Leys area of Inverness.

Members of the Highland Council's Education, Culture and Sport Committee have agreed funding for the construction of the school will be provided from within their Education, Culture and Sport Service capital programme.

The estimated cost of the school is £7 million.

The planned new school would accommodate initially up to 279 primary pupils in 11 classrooms and 60 nursery pupils in two sessions.

In addition, there would be provision for a community room and wraparound childcare. The school would be designed to allow additional classrooms to be added in the future, if required.

Pupils attending Milton of Leys Primary school would attend Millburn Academy for their Secondary education. The Milton of Leys Primary School catchment area will include the Milton of Leys and Dell of Inshes Housing Estates.

The Highland Council hopes to complete development of the new school by August 2011.

Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of the Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee said: "The need for a new primary school for the Milton of Leys community has clearly been established and I welcome this commitment to provide a new school that will not only serve this community but ease the pressure on Inshes Primary."
