Work has started on clearing the site of the former Douglas Bader Garden for the Disabled in Duffus Park, Cupar.

The site, which has been fenced off for a number of years, will be re-landscaped to form a new rugby/football grass pitch by the Council’s Parks and Countryside Service.

The initial work, which is being carried out using labour from those on the Community Service programme, includes the lifting of paths and removal of the raised beds. The paving sets will be recycled in other landscape projects.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed by late March in time to sow grass seeds on the pitch in April. The existing rugby pitch will form the location for a new synthetic grass pitch.

Councillor Andrew Arbuckle, Area Chair of the North East Fife Committee, said: "I'm pleased that The Duffus Park Partnership agreed the move at their meeting in December. Whilst it is sad to see the old garden go, we must move forward with our development plans for Duffus Park.

"Improving sport, leisure and cultural opportunities is one of Fife Council’s Big 8 priorities and this work will get us well on the way to improving pitch provision in the area."
