Safety fencing is to be erected at the Poldrate Mill in Haddington to protect the historic mill wheel, thanks to a contribution of £5,000 towards the costs from the East Lothian Civic Pride Fund.
The Civic Pride Fund awards grants to a wide range of groups for activities and projects that will instil a sense of civic pride within communities. Over £30,000 has been awarded for projects across the county for 2009/10.
The Lamp of Lothian Trust requested £5,000 towards the costs of erecting new safety fencing around the mill wheel and lade. Over 1,000 people of all ages visit the Grade A-listed Elizabeth Hamilton buildings each week, while the River Tyne walkway and neighbouring businesses also attract visitors to the area. The safety fencing will protect members of the public as well as the historic mill.
East Lothian Provost Councillor Sheena Richardson said: "The Lamp of Lothian Trust has restored many of Haddington's most historic buildings, making a significant contribution to the character and aesthetic appeal of the town. This project balances the need to preserve and enhance the mill, while also protecting the public."
Cabinet member for Community Services, Councillor Stuart Currie added: "The area surrounding the Elizabeth Hamilton buildings at Poldrate is well-used by members of the public. We are pleased to support this project through the Civic Pride Fund."
Gil Gray, General Manager of the Lamp of Lothian Trust, said the addition of sympathetically designed fencing will ensure children are safe while at the same time enhancing the historic surroundings.
