Plans for an East Renfrewshire quarry fix have been delayed.
The delayed plans include the filling-in of 40-foot deep caverns under the Braidbar Quarry area of Giffnock to stabilise dangerous ground, the removal of planning blight from some houses in Forres Avenue, and the provision of a new home for Giffnock North Athletic Club and improvement of Huntly Park.
East Renfrewshire Council’s cabinet has given the green light to extend project deadlines previously agreed with developer Macdonald Estates from October 2009 to October 2011.
This will affect the original tentative completion date of November 2013, now also likely to be delayed by two years.
Council leader Councillor Jim Fletcher said: "The developer has to pay for the remediation works by selling part of the land for housing once work is complete. That has become more difficult in the current economic climate and that is why we have agreed to a longer timescale.
"Macdonald estates and the council are firmly committed to solving the long-running Braidbar Quarries issue and if we have to wait a little longer in the interests of safety and a lasting solution with all the benefits that will bring, then that is the sensible thing to do."
