Scottish Liquidations Decrease For Third Month Running

The number of Scottish companies going into liquidation has decreased over the past three months.

The latest figures from Companies House show that 82 firms were liquidated in January 09, a 20% decrease compared to November 08 which saw 99 firms liquidated.

A total of 83 firms were liquidated in December 08.

Ceri Rogers, organiser of New Start Scotland - the country's largest business support exhibition - said: "The entrepreneurial spirit is still alive and well in Scotland as many Scots fight hard to keep their business open during the recession.

"We're committed to encouraging and supporting Scotland's future business leaders. New Start Scotland aims to boost Scotland’s SMEs by providing entrepreneurs with the best chance possible to survive the economic downturn."

In January, Scottish liquidations accounted for just under 5% of the UK total.

Sir Tom Farmer, this year's key speaker at New Start Scotland, said: "Running a successful business through 2009 is not going to be easy. The looming recession brings a new set of financial hurdles that can trip even the best run businesses. But it is not all bad news, opportunities for substantial growth exist for the companies who are best placed and best prepared to seize them. There has never been a more important time to get the right advice for your business."

And one lucky fledgling entrepreneur will walk away with £30,000 of business support services, including £5,000 cash to turn their business dreams into reality.

The competition is open to any Scottish new-start company - less than six months - who offer interesting, innovative or unusual products or services.

Dragons' Den style heats will run at New Start Scotland - SECC, Friday 27th & Saturday 28th March - with the grand final taking place on the Saturday afternoon.

To enter, visit www.newstartscotland.com or call 0845 290 3190.

New Start Scotland is run by Insight Events, in association with Business Gateway, Regus and University of Glasgow’s Venture Navigator.
