The contractor building the new bridge linking Forthside to Stirling city centre has advised Stirling Council that the opening has been put back until next year as it is taking longer than planned to complete the final elements of work to the bridge.
James Scobie, Divisional Director for Edmund Nuttall Limited, the contractor for the new bridge, said: "As the new structure is nearing completion, major components, including the main stays, are being stressed in a controlled process to introduce the required strength and rigidity. Given the complex and unique nature of the bridge design, this stressing process is taking longer than originally anticipated and has required adjustment to the structure's support systems."
Commenting on the delay Councillor Scott Farmer, portfolio holder for Corporate, Resources and Economy said: "While this is deeply disappointing the Council is keen to ensure that the bridge is finished to the highest standards. This iconic and unique structure will grace the skyline of Stirling for many years to come and while a delay is regrettable we must be patient and allow the contractor the time needed to complete the adjustments they have identified."
