Uni Seeks Major Contractor For Library

The University of Aberdeen is seeking major contractors with proven track records who are interested in bidding for the construction of one of the most prestigious new buildings in Scotland in recent years.

The tender process for construction of the new library is underway. This is expected to generate a strong field of construction companies experienced in major projects of a unique nature.

The University has decided to push ahead with this project despite the current economic gloom and downturn in the market. It believes the move to tender will send a powerful signal of its confidence in the future role the new library will play in terms of the international future of the University, and the economic and cultural strength of the North-east.

At a total project cost of £57m, the new library spearheads a £230m investment programme by the University to develop its campus infrastructure to match its ambition to be ranked within the world's top one hundred universities.

The University anticipates construction to begin adjacent to the existing Queen Mother Library on the King's College campus early summer 2009, with the new building opening for students, staff, and local communities in time for the start of the new academic year in late summer 2011.

The task of turning the vision created by Danish architects, schmidt hammer lassen into a distinctive new landmark on the Aberdeen skyline is expected to attract wide interest from major construction firms.

Prof Christopher Gane, Vice Principal for Culture and Communities, said: "The unusual and striking external and internal design created by our architects has attracted international attention. We hope to attract a first-class field of major players in the construction sector who want to be associated with a project of this scale, distinction and calibre.

"This visually striking building will also be a cultural landmark for students, academics and people of many backgrounds and interests, inviting them to be inspired, enthused, educated and entertained."
