A programme of conservation and repair on historic Kirkyards in Aberdeenshire is set to continue through an award of £49,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a wider project valued at £150,000.
Kirkyards, which are a focal point for many communities, contain a wealth of information which assists us understand our local and nation's history.
Each generation has a responsibility to pass these valuable assets onto the next in a condition which allows them to continue as places which can be studied and enjoyed.
The funding for the next phase in the Kirkyards programme will support works to Marykirk and Fordyce.
At Marykirk, a substantial structure known as the Thornton Aisle, part of the original 17th Century Kirk, which contains a wonderfully ornate mid 17th Century wall panel, is to be repaired and re-roofed.
In Fordyce, a further phase of works will complete the repair and stone conservation work on a number of structures within the old kirkyard. This project is also being grant assisted by Historic Scotland and the Pilgrim Trust.
Last year, Aberdeenshire Council was awarded a National Gold Award at the International Green Apple Awards in recognition of its work to preserve historic kirkyards throughout the area for future generations.
Environment Planner Richard Leith said: "The continuing support for this project by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and associated funding partners, recognises the model which Aberdeenshire Council has firmly established for the care, protection and interpretation of irreplaceable historic sites through best conservation practise and the publication of attractively produced information which assists us in their use and understanding."
Infrastructure Services Committee chairman Cllr Peter Argyle said: "This funding boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund is great news for what is a very worthwhile project in Aberdeenshire."
