Energy giant SSE has welcomed the UK Government's commitment to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructure in its recent Comprehensive Spending Review, specifically highlighting the positive implications for the Scottish Cluster and the Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station.
Finlay McCutcheon, Managing Director of SSE Thermal, described the government's support for the Scottish Cluster as "a strong commitment to advancing a low carbon future for Scotland and the wider UK." He emphasised that Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station is an "essential anchor project within the cluster," and that the recent announcement brings its delivery a significant step closer.
McCutcheon underlined the crucial role of carbon capture technology in achieving the UK’s Clean Power targets. "Today’s news highlights the need to deliver clean, low carbon dispatchable power that strengthens energy security in a renewables-led system," he stated.
SSE's Peterhead site is strategically located near existing North Sea oil and gas infrastructure. The company, in collaboration with partners Equinor and Acorn, aims to repurpose this infrastructure for CCS. This move is expected to create and retain jobs in North East Scotland, while accelerating the wider decarbonisation of the region's industrial clusters.
"This marks an important step forward for the future of UK energy infrastructure," McCutcheon added, reiterating SSE's commitment to collaborating with government and industry partners to support the transition to a clean energy future.
The government's Comprehensive Spending Review has confirmed funding to progress the Acorn Project, which underpins the Scottish Cluster. While the exact allocation of funds for specific projects like Peterhead remains subject to further detail and final investment decisions, the broader commitment signals a significant endorsement of CCS as a key technology for the UK's net-zero ambitions.
