Glasgow City Council has approved the disposal of a significant number of properties and land parcels across the city, paving the way for a wide range of new developments including social, mid-market, and private housing, supermarket expansion, student accommodation, retail spaces, and advanced manufacturing units. The decisions were made by a council committee.
Among the key approvals, four properties will be sold to two housing associations for the development of social homes:
• A former library and children's home at 35 Arran Drive in Bellahouston and a detached five-bedroom bungalow at 17 Fettes Street in Carntyne are set to be acquired by Wheatley Homes.
• Two flats at 283a / 283b North Woodside Road will be sold to KEY Housing Association, subject to successful negotiations.
Further land disposals approved include:
• 0.2 acres at the former Stonedyke Neighbourhood Centre at 9 Belsyde Avenue in Drumchapel will be sold to developers Belsyde Property, who plan to build 12 mid-market houses. The council will receive £7,821 for this land.
• 0.57 acres of land on Springburn Road, adjacent to their existing store, will be sold to Lidl for £300,000, enabling the supermarket to expand its offering.
• Five plots of land, totaling 30.15 hectares, at Kenmuir Road in Carmyle will be disposed of to Carmyle Developments. This sale, valued at £1.45 million, will form part of a larger residential development comprising 400 homes for sale.
In-principle agreements were also reached on two further significant sites:
• A small parcel of land (0.0047 acres) on George Street in the city centre is set for disposal to BKF Newco DM Limited. This will allow the company to consolidate its ownership for a planned student accommodation and retail development. Negotiations on the sale are now set to commence.
• An 0.12-acre piece of land between tenements at Ardery Street in Partick has been agreed in principle for disposal to Mr Michael McDonagh, who intends to refurbish and develop the adjoining former Partick Methodist Church into a wedding and events venue. Negotiations for this sale will also now begin.
Additionally, the committee granted approval to initiate negotiations on the disposal of two plots of land, totaling 0.25 acres, at Bartholomew Street and Dalmarnock Road/Playfair Street to Clyde Gateway. Clyde Gateway aims to consolidate this development site to construct a 40,000 square foot industrial building, earmarked for uses such as advanced manufacturing.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing, Development and Land Use at Glasgow City Council, highlighted the positive implications of these decisions: "The number of disposals being agreed and taken forward shows the ongoing development of sites across Glasgow, with homes, jobs and community spaces being created through new uses for buildings and land. The receipts generated by these sales will be reinvested in public services."
