Dozens of new roles are expected in Scotland after SP Energy Networks (SPEN) awarded a multi-million-pound contract to electricity infrastructure specialist Linxon, which has been scaling up its newly opened Glasgow base.
Linxon's Glasgow office, launched earlier this year and now roughly double its original size, will help deliver critical grid infrastructure as part of SPEN's wider investment drive.
The agreement forms part of SPEN's £12bn programme to reinforce Scotland's transmission network. Linxon will draw on advanced grid automation and high-voltage technologies from Hitachi Energy, which has also recently opened a Glasgow office, with the city developing a reputation as a "grids skills hub".
The work ties into SPEN's Tealing to Kincardine overhead line upgrade project (TKUP) and supports connections to the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) scheme.
Plans include upgrading overhead lines in Fife from 275kV to 400kV and expanding transmission infrastructure at Conland, Devonside, Mossmorran and Westfield.
Together, these investments are designed to boost capacity, strengthen resilience and accelerate Scotland's transition to a low-carbon energy system.
Under the award, Linxon will lead substation design and source materials for substations across Scotland's central belt and Fife. Hitachi Energy will provide advanced grid automation and high-voltage solutions, including SF6-free EconiQ switchgear, as well as digital substation, automation, monitoring and operational intelligence technologies to enhance performance and reliability.
The projects will help accommodate rising electricity demand driven by the electrification of transport, heating and industry, alongside increasing volumes of clean power.
Guy Jefferson, Transmission Managing Director at SP Energy Networks, said: "This award represents a significant milestone for our business in Scotland and further strengthens our commitment to ensuring the massive electricity network upgrades we're delivering will continue to create jobs and opportunities in the UK.
"As we continue with pace on our record rewiring, projects of this scale will support highly skilled employment and create opportunities to for key suppliers to grow their own engineering and project delivery teams.
"We're proud to be delivering infrastructure that will help unlock renewable energy, strengthen network resilience and whilst kickstarting and supporting the careers of people up and down the country."
Angel Guijarro, Managing Director, Linxon Europe, said: "Scotland's transmission market is moving at pace, and Linxon is ready to respond with the local capability, global expertise and delivery experience these programmes require. Successful delivery is about more than building infrastructure. It means working closely with our clients, putting safety and quality at the heart of every decision, applying proven lower-carbon technologies where appropriate, and delivering lasting value for communities and the wider supply chain.
"This award reflects the continued growth of our business in Scotland and the increasing role our Glasgow team is playing in delivering critical transmission infrastructure. Since opening earlier this year, our Glasgow office has expanded significantly, strengthening our ability to support projects of this scale while creating opportunities for highly skilled engineering and project delivery professionals. By combining our delivery expertise with advanced technologies from leading industry partners, we are helping to build a more resilient and future-ready network. We are committed to supporting Scotland's long-term energy ambitions and to continuing to grow our presence and capabilities in the market for years to come."
Laura Fleming, Country Managing Director, Hitachi Energy UK & Ireland, said: "As electricity demand grows, investing in transmission infrastructure is essential to delivering a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy future. Together with Linxon and SP Energy Networks, we are supporting the expansion, modernization, and digitalization of critical substations across Scotland through a combination of advanced grid automation and high voltage technologies, including SF6-free EconiQ solutions. These technologies will increase transmission capacity, strengthen grid resilience, and support the integration of growing volumes of renewable energy, helping the UK's electricity network evolve to meet rising demand. This investment is part of our broader commitment to building a stronger and more sustainable power system for decades to come."
The deal adds significantly to Linxon's UK transmission portfolio, underpinning the company's growth in Scotland and further consolidating its position across the national transmission sector.
