South Ayrshire Council has moved a step closer to developing a solar farm at the Auchincruive Bing site in Prestwick, following the completion of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The EIA represents a key milestone for the project, which is anticipated to generate millions of pounds in revenue over the next 25 years.
Auchincruive Bing, situated near Prestwick Airport, has been selected due to its strong potential for energy generation, favourable return on investment, and proximity to a number of major energy users.
The assessment delivers a comprehensive environmental overview, including tree and bat surveys and a flood-risk appraisal. Its conclusions indicate the proposed scheme is unlikely to cause any significant environmental effects.
With the EIA finalised, the proposal will now enter the planning phase, during which the public will be invited to submit their views on the plans.
If planning permission is granted, the solar farm is expected to be operational by 2029.
Councillor Brian Connolly, Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Economy and Strategy Policy Lead, said: "This project is not only set to generate clean energy and reduce South Ayrshire's carbon emissions, but it will also provide a long-term revenue stream to support vital council services."
Councillor Martin Kilbride, Housing and Property Services Policy Lead for the council, added: "Setting up a solar farm is a complex process, and we're grateful to colleagues at North Ayrshire Council for connecting us with the experts who supported their own project."
