Public Asked For Views On Latest Musselburgh Active Toun Plans

Construction News Image

A consultation has opened to gather feedback on concept designs for active travel improvements between Musselburgh's Fisherrow Harbour and Links View.

The proposals form part of the Musselburgh Active Toun (MAT) project, which aims to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible across the town.

Concept designs for the Fisherrow Harbour to Links View stretch focus on improving the functionality, accessibility and overall experience of this popular waterfront area.

Residents, businesses, visitors, harbour users and anyone with an interest in Musselburgh's waterfront and travel network are encouraged to share their views.

People can explore the designs and complete an online survey via the project website until 16 September 2026 at bit.ly/MusselburghActiveToun.

A drop-in event will take place at The Fisherrow Centre, South Street, Musselburgh, from 2.30pm until 7pm on Wednesday, 19 August, where members of the public can find out more.

Developed with input from the Fisherrow Harbour and Seafront Association, the plans aim to create a more welcoming, user-friendly environment while maintaining the harbour's distinctive character. Key features include widening the Promenade coastal path for shared use, enhanced landscaping, a new footway at Links View, new seating areas and additional planting.

This stretch forms part of Route 3 within the wider MAT scheme, which would deliver a high-quality active travel link between Fisherrow Harbour and Prestongrange.

Councillor John McMillan, East Lothian Council's Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Economic Development and Tourism, said: "Musselburgh Active Toun aims to provide safer ways to get around through walking, wheeling, and cycling on designated routes. It forms part of a broader initiative to improve the town's public spaces and bring about significant environmental benefits, including the reduction of carbon emissions and an increase in air quality.

"The feedback gathered from the public will help inform the final designs. I would encourage people to take part in this consultation to ensure the project reflects the needs and aspirations of the local community."

Although this section of Route 3 sits within the general footprint of the Musselburgh Flood Protection Scheme, it is being progressed through MAT. The project team — comprising East Lothian Council and design consultants Jacobs and AECOM — is working closely with the flood protection team to coordinate activity.

Under MAT, the council proposes six active travel routes linking key destinations in Musselburgh to improve connectivity and reduce car dependency. Following earlier engagement, three routes have advanced to detailed design.

Transport Scotland has provided funding to take forward design work on the MAT network, and the team is seeking feedback specifically on the Fisherrow Harbour to Links View concept designs as part of the current consultation.
