Network Rail will begin a £1.3m scheme next month to refurbish the rail bridge over Westfield Road in Edinburgh, bolstering reliability for journeys to and from the capital.
The bridge carries the railway over a busy arterial route. Works will include replacing the timber deck, carrying out steelwork repairs and refreshing protective paint.
The project is designed to strengthen the structure, extend its lifespan and help keep services running smoothly.
To undertake the work safely, overnight lane closures will be in place on Westfield Road from 8 August to 9 October. During the most intensive phase, the road will be fully closed from 8-18 September.
A section of railway predominantly used by freight services will also be closed between 11-14 September.
Network Rail is coordinating with the City of Edinburgh Council, local businesses and other partners to minimise disruption, taking account of events at nearby Murrayfield Stadium. People travelling in the area are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time.
Owen Ferry, project manager at Network Rail, said: "Projects like this are a vital part of how we look after Scotland's railway. The bridge over Westfield Road plays an important role in keeping trains moving safely across Edinburgh, and continued investment helps ensure the network can support communities for the long term.
"By carrying out this work now, we can extend the life of the bridge and reduce the risk of more significant and disruptive interventions in the future. We know this will cause some temporary inconvenience, and we're grateful for everyone's patience while we complete these improvements."
