JR Scaffold Services has been named a finalist for Project of the Year (large category) at the 2026 Scaffolding Excellence Awards, in recognition of its work on the complex restoration of the B-listed Walton Building at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Regarded as one of the industry's most respected accolades, the awards saw a record field this year, with submissions up 40% on 2025. The heightened competition underscores the significance of JR Scaffold Services' place on the shortlist.
The nomination reflects delivery of one of Scotland’s most technically demanding scaffolding schemes, supporting essential roof renovation works at the historic Walton Building.
Acting as lead contractor, the firm engineered and installed a bespoke access solution that enabled safe working while the hospital continued to operate as a live environment.
The programme posed a series of intricate engineering and logistical constraints.
Set within Glasgow's Central Conservation Area and above a network of historic tunnels, the site could not accept conventional ground loadings. Working with Gallery Access Solutions and Coltart Earley Architecture, the team implemented a beam-supported, double-gabled scaffold and fitted a fully rolling temporary roof to protect the structure throughout the refurbishment.
All surrounding roads and access routes also had to remain open for ambulances, hospital staff, patients, deliveries and pedestrians during the project.
To strengthen safety and preparedness, the company recreated the bespoke scaffold at its headquarters before site works began, allowing operatives to complete practical familiarisation training.
The shortlist acknowledges not only the project's technical excellence but also JR Scaffold Services' collaborative delivery, rigorous planning and unwavering commitment to safety in one of Scotland's most challenging live construction settings.
Winners of the Scaffolding Excellence Awards 2026 will be announced on 11 September at Manchester Central.
