Balfour Beatty has secured a two-year, £325 million contract from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to deliver the Netherton Hub in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
The award, made under SSEN's Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment Offshore Framework, follows the company’s 2025 appointment to undertake enabling works at the location.
Designed to reinforce the UK's electricity network, the Netherton Hub will allow renewable power generated in northern Scotland to be transmitted efficiently to demand centres across the country. Balfour Beatty will carry out the earthworks and civil engineering, creating five platforms to host two substations and three converter stations, alongside an operations base and related facilities.
Philip Hoare, Balfour Beatty Group Chief Executive, said: "Securing this contract reinforces Balfour Beatty’s position at the forefront of the UK's energy infrastructure market.
"The Netherton Hub will play a pivotal role in enabling the delivery of secure, homegrown, low-carbon power at scale. We are proud to be working with SSEN to deliver infrastructure of such national importance - drawing on our proven expertise in complex, large-scale projects."
At peak, the project will employ more than 800 people, with a pledge to create local opportunities and ensure that over 5% of the workforce are apprentices and graduates, reflecting the company’s commitment to The 5% Club.
