The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) is seeking nominations for the 2026 edition of the Scottish Design Tutor Awards. The annual awards programme aims to celebrate the indispensable role that design tutors play within architectural education and acknowledge their efforts in nurturing the next generation of architects across Scotland.
Design serves as a core function for architects, and preserving elevated standards in architectural training is viewed as a critical requirement for securing quality across the built environment. Because students cultivate their design skills and knowledge primarily through practical project work, the guidance, background, and teaching provided by design tutors remains foundational to achieving educational excellence.
The Design Tutor Award was originally proposed by the late Ian Appleton and has since served to strengthen the relationship between the Incorporation and the various schools of architecture across Scotland. The scheme accepts nominations for active full-time or part-time design tutors within Scottish architecture schools who actively foster learning via project-based design instruction.
In addition to individual instructors, groups of tutors can be put forward for consideration, and candidates can also be nominated for retrospective recognition. RIAS is encouraging submissions that specifically highlight exceptional teaching capabilities, dedication, and a clear impact on architectural design education.
