The new £11m extension at West Calder High School has reached its final milestone, marking the successful completion of a project that delivers advanced new facilities for staff and pupils.
The two-storey development, completed within both the scheduled timeframe and budget, expands the school's capacity to accommodate more than 1,300 pupils. It features enhanced facilities designed to support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning. Included in the new block are multi-purpose collaborative learning spaces, specialist classrooms for computing, technology, and science, alongside an accessible outdoor learning area located on the roof.
The expansion was necessary to accommodate a growing school roll driven by local housing developments. It had been intentionally factored into the original school design when the facility was first constructed in 2018.
The project represented a unique collaboration across multiple Galliford Try businesses. Morrison Construction Building Central acted as the main contractor, Facilities Management continues to provide FM services, and Galliford Try Investments Consultancy Services (GTICS) supplied expertise across construction, FM, and financial management. The project was delivered by development partner Hub South East on behalf of West Lothian Council.
Provost Cathy Muldoon commented: "The outstanding new extension at West Calder High School is providing excellent facilities that will support our young people in key subjects and create inspiring spaces to learn, collaborate and achieve."
Phil Harris, Managing Director for Galliford Try Investments, added: "West Calder High School is a fantastic example of the strength of collaboration across our business. By bringing together expertise from Morrison Construction, GT Facilities Management and GTICS, we were able to deliver a seamless approach that will support the client throughout the projects lifecycle. This integrated way of working allows us to create long-term value for our clients and the communities they serve."
David Ewing, Managing Director of Morrison Construction Building Central, said: "We are proud to have delivered this important project for West Lothian Council and to see the new facilities now in use by pupils and staff. The extension not only provides modern, flexible learning spaces designed to inspire, but also demonstrates the value of collaboration between our teams, our partners at Hub South East, and the client. It is a great example of how we can deliver sustainable, high-quality educational environments that will benefit the community for many years to come."
